One day Morgan’s friend Leigh Milverton showed her an old parchment that she said contained a love spell that is supposed to make irresistible to anyone you read the incantation to. The Milverton Ritual had been in the Milverton family for centuries. The spell was only thirteen words long, from some long-dead language and what's more, Leigh’s Great Ethel swore to her that it really works.

Leigh told Morgan she planned to use it on a guy named Steve, who she'd had the hots for the last two years, longer than she and Morgan been roommates, but he didn't give Leigh the time of day. Two days later, Leigh and Steve were engaged. Morgan was going to have to find herself another roommate by the end of the semester and she was thinking about Leigh’s enchanted parchment in a brand-new way.

When Leigh and Steve eloped, Morgan had the apartment to herself and frantically search for the old parchment.
